Euroluce — the international lighting exhibition held as part of Salone del Mobile Milano

Light as an architectural element

In the Italian tradition, a light fixture rarely remains merely a source of illumination—it is a design piece in its own right, competing with furniture for attention rather than discreetly complementing it. This is precisely why chandeliers and lamps by Italian factories become exhibits in design museums, including MoMA. Through Mebeltour, you can order lighting directly from the factory—together with the rest of your interior furnishings, as part of a single project with unified logistics.

FLOS: from Cocoon to design museums

Sculptural floor lamps at the Milan Design Exhibition

FLOS was founded in 1962 in Merano by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina — from the very beginning, it was more than just a factory: it was a designers’ laboratory where the materials and engineering of domestic lighting were reimagined. The signature Cocoon technology — a liquid resin sprayed onto a metal frame — became one of the brand’s most distinctive material signatures. In 1964, management passed to Sergio Gandini, who moved production to Bovezzo, in the province of Brescia.

In 1972, FLOS lighting fixtures, including designs by the Castiglioni brothers, were featured in MoMA’s legendary exhibition “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” — marking the brand’s international recognition as an avant-garde company. Today, FLOS has two operational headquarters — in Brescia (Italy) and Valencia (Spain) — and its collection is divided into decorative, architectural, outdoor and custom lighting.

Masiero: handcrafted chandeliers from Treviso

Handmade Masiero crystal chandelier

Masiero was founded in 1981 in Casale sul Sile, in the province of Treviso. Unlike FLOS’s industrial approach, Masiero focuses on artisanal production: the entire process—from sketching to metalworking and final assembly—is carried out within a single production facility. It is a brand for those seeking a handcrafted classic or neoclassical chandelier rather than a mass-produced design object.

How to Choose Lighting for Your Interior

The general rule among Italian designers: the more contemporary and minimalist the furniture, the bolder the lighting fixture can be — and vice versa. FLOS works seamlessly in modern and contemporary interiors (including living rooms centred around Rimadesio and Molteni&C), while Masiero chandeliers are a natural choice for classic bedrooms and living rooms, paired with Devon&Devon in the bathroom or Tonin Casa in the dining room.
