Minotti vs Poliform vs Flexform vs Baxter: what separates them, and what it costs

Minotti vs Poliform is the comparison most buyers start with, and Flexform and Baxter belong in it too: four Italian upholstery makers based in Brianza and the hills above Como, all within twenty kilometres of each other. All four build well, so the useful question is not which brand is “better” but what each one does best and how much it charges for it.

I have been buying directly from Italian factories since 2010, and every quote I send is built line by line from a price list. That is why this comparison uses the factories’ own 2026 price lists rather than brochures. All prices are ex VAT, ex works, delivery not included, rounded to the nearest €5.

Minotti vs Poliform vs Flexform vs Baxter in short

In one line each: Minotti builds the living room around the sofa, Poliform furnishes the whole house from one catalogue, Flexform is chosen for deep, easy everyday seating, and Baxter treats leather as the base material rather than the upgrade. Minotti: the sofa as the anchor of the room

Minotti is an upholstery maker founded by Alberto Minotti in Meda in 1948: sofas, armchairs and ottomans are the core, and the rest of the range exists to support them. So if the whole living room is planned around one large sofa, Minotti is the first catalogue to open.

The price list shows how the sofas are built. Rodolfo Dordoni’s Freeman, for example, has a multi-layer wood frame on rubber webbing. Its back cushions are goose down certified «Etichetta Oro» by Assopiuma with a memory-foam core, the seat cushions are reversible, and the base is an extruded aluminium frame in a bronze finish. On top of that, seat and back covers come off in every version.

Minotti sells fabric in four price groups, E to H, then Alcantara, then three leathers: Pelle, Pelle Extra and Pelle Nature. When two groups are mixed on one sofa, the whole piece is priced at the higher one.

Horizonte, by Marcio Kogan’s Studio MK27, shows a different side of the same company: the sofa sits 7 cm off the floor on a recessed black metal plinth, which is why it seems to float.

Two conclusions follow. First, leather carries the steepest premium of the four makers at Minotti: Freeman Duvet in Pelle leather costs 62% more than in fabric E. Second, prices vary more inside the brand than between brands — an Andersen in fabric and a Horizonte in Pelle Nature are three times apart. As a result, “how much is a Minotti sofa?” has no answer until you name the model and the covering.

Poliform: one maker for the whole house

Poliform is a maker from Inverigo, near Como, that furnishes the whole house: wardrobes, wall systems, bedrooms, Varenna kitchens and upholstery. That makes it the strongest choice when the brief is a complete home in one style rather than a single living room. Alberto and Aldo Spinelli and Giovanni Anzani founded the company in 1970, turning a family workshop dating from 1942 into an industrial operation (company history on Poliform’s site). Most of its sofas — Bristol, Saint-Germain, Brera, Mondrian, Westside — are by one designer, Jean-Marie Massaud. This is why a Poliform sofa, table and wardrobe read as a single piece of work without any styling effort.

In practice, two Bristol specifications matter. Seat height is 36 cm as standard or 38 cm on 65 mm feet to order. Seat depth is 57 cm with double back cushions or 89 cm with a single row, and that changes the sofa more than the choice of fabric.

Leather costs half as much extra at Poliform as at Minotti: Bristol in leather P is 31% above fabric E, not 62%. So when someone wants a leather sofa on a tighter budget, Bristol is the first thing I show them.

Flexform: comfort without the performance

Flexform is a maker from Meda founded by brothers Romeo, Pietro and Agostino Galimberti in 1959 (Flexform’s own history), and its sofas are designed to be sat in every evening rather than admired from across the room. Notably, Flexform and Minotti share a town but answer different briefs: Minotti is about the architecture of the room, Flexform about comfort.

Its best-known sofa is Antonio Citterio’s Groundpiece: low, deep and modular, with goose-down cushions in the premium version or Dacron in the standard one. I did not have Flexform’s price list in hand for this piece, so the figure here comes from Italian dealers’ published prices: Groundpiece from roughly €13,300 ex VAT, depending on the layout. One request reaches us regularly: “furniture like Flexform, only cheaper”. The honest answer is further down, in the section on copies.

Baxter: leather is the point

Baxter is a maker from Lurago d’Erba, near Como, founded by Luigi and Paolo Bestetti in 1990, and it is the only one of the four for which leather is the foundation rather than an option. Its indoor sofas are made in soft leathers only, so these models are not offered in fabric at all.

Capitonné is button tufting that pulls leather into a diamond pattern. On Paola Navone’s Chester Moon it covers every surface, including the outside back, and is done by hand. Budapest Soft goes the opposite way, with raw-edge «a filo vivo» seams that leave the cut edge of the leather visible. In other words, the same company works in two opposite characters.

Baxter grades its leathers from TB, the most accessible, to A. Using two leathers or two colours on one piece adds 6% to the price.

The surprise in this comparison: a leather Baxter costs about the same as a fabric Minotti. Budapest Soft in TB leather lists at €9,020 ex VAT; Freeman Duvet in fabric E lists at €9,420. Therefore, if leather is what you want, Baxter gives it to you at the price of someone else’s fabric.

Leather against leather: a 250 cm sofa

A leather sofa of about 250 cm from any of these makers starts at roughly €5,700 bought direct, ex VAT. To keep the comparison fair, the table below lists only leather sofas of similar length, from the most accessible leather to the most expensive.

The first three rows are the entry point to a leather sofa from any of these makers. Above that, you are paying for a particular design — Chester Moon’s hand tufting, Freeman’s construction — rather than for the leather itself.

Armchairs: same pattern, narrower range

Armchairs from these makers cost roughly €2,650 to €7,700 bought direct, ex VAT, and follow the same logic as the sofas with less distance between them. The least expensive comparable chair is Poliform Le Club in fabric; the most expensive is Baxter Chester Moon in grade A leather.

There is one difference that matters for families. According to Poliform’s price list, Le Club’s upholstery is not removable, whereas GamFratesi’s Minotti Shelley has a frame clad in saddle hide and fabric cushions that do come off.

List price versus buying direct

A factory price list is the retail price the factory recommends to showrooms, while buying direct means list price less the factory’s 40% discount, plus our 5% commission. The commission is fixed and shown as a separate line, so you can see exactly how the total is built.

For a Minotti Freeman Duvet 245 cm in fabric H, for example:

• Minotti list price ex VAT: €10,590;
• less the 40% factory discount: €6,354;
• plus 5% Mebeltour commission: €6,670.

“Like Flexform, only cheaper”: what you actually get

A copy reproduces the silhouette, not the construction, which is why you can barely tell them apart in a showroom. The difference shows up in use: in how the cushions hold their shape and how the covering wears.

What to check on a copy before buying:

• Filling. Minotti Freeman cushions are down around foams of different densities, whereas a copy is often a single slab of foam.
• Frame. The original is multi-layer wood on rubber webbing, so ask what the copy’s frame is made of and ask to see a cross-section.
• Covering. The factory’s own fabric or leather collection, versus something “close in colour”.
• Paperwork. An original comes with a factory invoice in your name and the manufacturer’s warranty; a copy does not.

The practical advice follows from this: if Flexform or leather Minotti is beyond the budget, a simpler original is a better buy than a copy of an expensive one. Poliform Bristol in fabric is €3,905 direct; Minotti Andersen in fabric is €4,100. Both are genuine Italian pieces with factory paperwork, at the price of a good copy.

Choosing for your own project

1. One room or the whole house? If wardrobes, bedroom and kitchen need to match, choose Poliform. If it is just the living room, Minotti or Flexform.
2. Leather or fabric? For leather, start with Baxter, where it is the base material. For fabric, look at Minotti, Poliform and Flexform, because Baxter’s indoor sofas are leather only.
3. Children and pets? Then removable covers decide it. On Minotti Freeman, seat and back covers come off in every version, while Poliform Le Club’s upholstery is fixed.
4. Character? Crisp and contemporary: Minotti and Poliform. Low and relaxed: Flexform. Expressive, with visible leatherwork: Baxter.

Which of the four is the most expensive?

It depends on the model more than the brand, because prices vary more within each maker than between them. Among 250 cm sofas, Baxter Chester Moon in grade A leather is the highest at €22,485 list ex VAT, and Poliform Bristol in fabric B is the lowest at €6,195.

What is the difference between Minotti and Poliform?
